Each Core Sample contains a primordial palette of color, texture, and cross-sectional markings that press the viewer to take a closer look. The texture-rich environments are abstracted from the landscapes of Colorado, and filtered through a deep fascination with our planet’s place in the universe. These paintings are constructed without a specific orientation or directionality - the work moves like a compass, and can be displayed in any orientation. The fluidity of the orientation lies in the rhythmic application of color and texture. Painted primarily in acrylic, these mixed media paintings utilize a variety of paint, pigments, and application methods to create areas of opalescence or metallics that quietly merge back to areas of matte. This technique gives the paintings their dimension and ties them even closer to the geologic and cosmic spaces that they represent. In making this work, Medina aims to spark the viewer with the same curiosity and wonderment he has for the world around him.
